Backstory
Summary
Syn grew up in the city with her twin brother Ezer and their parents up until the two siblings were 10 years old. Their parents died in a plane crash. The maternal grandparents took them in but when the two were 15 years old all of their grandparents started dying off, one after the other.

Before the paternal grandparents died: Ezer and Syn were both living with their mother’s sister in the city before they separated the siblings and sent Ezer off to the paternal grandparents, living high in the mountains.

They separated the siblings as they thought Ezer and Syn were displaying incestuous behavior. Ezer says in Generation 1, Chapter 19 that:

“I don’t care what they say. You don’t get over someone’s death. You just learn to live with it… but before that, it messes you up. Messes you up big time. Me and Syn did some innocent stupid stuff to cope: skipping school together, sneaking on the roof at night to watch the stars, talk locked in each other’s room for hours and way past bedtime, etc., but they only saw rebellious escapades, romantic nights under the stars and incestuous behavior.

“Then they found some pictures: my pictures. I loved photography. Syn was in most of those pictures. Sometimes out of accident but sometimes because she was the subject. There was nothing wrong in those pictures, but you know how people are…”

Ezer and Syn managed to be reunited with each other one year before the apocalypse started.

“I managed to convince the respective aunt to let me send Syn pictures the ‘family’ verified everything each time. There had to be no return address and I couldn’t be in the pictures… but they weren’t as smart as they thought they were. My caretakers – who never believed the whole incest thing- suggested I include a code so, I came up with something quite simple: in every tiny set of picture there was a hidden letter or a number. After three years, I had sent enough to spell out a message saying where and when I’ll wait for her. It couldn’t be too obvious, you know, so that’s what took the longest. But Syn has always been smart, I knew she’d figure it out. We met and ran away.”
